Correlation of Lipid Profile with the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease

Background: The pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) is preceded by the formation of atherosclerotic plaque which then causes narrowing of the lumen diameter of coronary artery. As the risk factors, plasma cholesterols, mainly atherogenic lipoprotein, play a major role in pathogenesis of the atherosclerosis. The severity of coronary stenosis in CAD patients can be assessed by Gensini score based on coronary arteriography results. Through this study will be investigated the correlation between lipid profile and Gensini score in CAD patients in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital.

Methods: This study was an observational-analytic with cross-sectional design. The sample of this study was 102 medical records of hospitalized CAD patients in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital from January to June 2017 which met the criterias for participation. Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis was used in this study, the result was significant if (p < 0.05).

Results: The result of correlation test showed only significant correlation on HDL-C with Gensini score (p = 0.014; r = -0.244). There were no significant correlation between total cholesterol (p = 0.889; r = 0.014), LDL-C (p = 0.936; r = 0.008), triglyceride (p = 0.222; r = 0.122), LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (p = 0.288; r = 0.106), non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio (p = 0.085; r = 0.171) and Gensini score.   

Conclusion: There was a significant correlation between HDL-C and Gensini score in CAD patients in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital with p value = 0.014 and negative weak correlation value r = -0.244.
