Background: Length of stay (LoS) can be used as an index of patient safety in precutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedure. Older age is a risk factor for longer hospital stay.
Objective: This study was to determine either age or the procedure of PCI itself will impacts length of hospital stay after PCI procedure in Bumi Waras Hospital.
Methods: We conducted a cross sectional study with comparative analysis. The study analysed patients’ characteristics and outcomes by LoS (short, ≤3 days; long >3 days; where LoS was the discharge date minus the admission date plus 1) and we divided the age into 3 groups (<45 years, 46-64 years and >65 years old) among 92 patients with ACS treated by PCI from February – December 2017.
Result: The youngest patients was 38 and the oldest was 82 years old with mean age 58.6 years old. Using Chi Square analysis, we noted differences in proportion of LoS in each age group (p = 0.022, p<0.05). There was a significant difference LoS for age <45 years old compared to >65 years old (p = 0.03, p<0.05) with moderate correlation (CC=0.389). Our subanalysis showed that there was a significant difference in LoS between early and primary PCI group compared to delayed PCI group ( p=0.026 and p=0.002, p<0.05).
Conclusions: Age has moderate correlation with LoS in ACS patients treated with PCI in our population. Patients with older age than 65 years old have longer LoS than patients with age younger than 45 years old. However our subanalysis has shown that patients who undergo delayed PCI have longer LoS compared to those treated with primary or early PCI. So we have to expect for longer LoS for older ACS patients treated with PCI especially those with delayed PCI.
