Background: The incidence of right heart failure is related with the severity of mitral stenosis. Although NT-proBNP and sST2 are known as the markers for heart failure, whether the level of these markers are related with the severity of mitral stenosis is still not elucidated. In this study, we analysed the correlation of NT-ProBNP and sST2 level with the severity of mitral stenosis.

Aim: To evaluate the relationship of NT-proBNP and sST2 levels with the severity of mitral stenosis.

Methods: This is an observational study with cross-sectional design. Samples from 72 patients of mitral stenosis were collected and 52 samples of them were continued to be analysed. The severity of mitral stenosis was evaluated from mitral valve area by planimetry ( severe mitral stenosis <1 cm2 ). The samples were devided into 2 groups (severe vs not severe). The level of NT-proBNP was measured by using immunoturbidimetrik method with Elecsys 2010 electrochemiluminescence. The level of sST2 was measured by using lateral flow immunoassay method with ASPECT-PLUS ST2 test. The mean comparation from both markers level in 2 groups were analysed by using T-test analysis using SPSS.

Results: This study found the level of NT-proBNP and sST2 are significantly correlated (r 0.413, p < 0.05). However, the level of NT-proBNP in both groups (severe vs not severe) are no significantly difference (2023.8 ± 1481.8 pg/mL vs 1858.9 ± 1280.6 pg/mL, consecutively with p = 0.972). Similarly, the level of sST2 is also not significantly difference between both groups (40.88 ± 27.3 ng/mL vs 40.6 ± 59 ng/mL consecutively with p 0.412).

Conclusion: NT-proBNP and sST2 levels are not correlated with the severity of mitral stenosis, although both markers has corresponding level.
